My original training was psycho-dynamic, and although intellectually very interesting, it never fully addressed some of the important issues and values in a way which really spoke to my experience. At times the power dynamic of the all-knowing therapist did not fit well with my values.
After much research I discovered existential-phenomenological psychotherapy, and this felt like ‘coming home’. It reflected the way I experienced the world.
Existential psychotherapy does not seek to create ‘all-knowing’ therapists, who are certain that all the theories they have studied are ‘truths’. Instead, it is an approach which embraces uncertainty and the truth that other than birth and death, everything in between is uncertain, and in trying to pretend this isn’t the case we may lead our lives inauthentically. Covid provided us with an excellent example that things are far from certain.
Living inauthentically can a hard and painful existence. Whilst living authentically can require bravery. It is hard for us to accept that there are many things we cannot control, whilst taking full responsibility for our actions. This can lead to anxiety, despair, and depression.
Existential therapy places importance on exploring our human need to find meaning and purpose in this uncertain world, and to live life authentically. It helps clients explore their options and to accept, embrace and honour their freedom whilst acknowledge the responsibility for their decisions in relation to themselves, others, and the world.
It is a more collaborative approach in which the therapist and client work together to explore the client’s dilemmas in a form of dialogue. A therapist can never be an expert on someone else’s mind, but they can provide a safe companion /guide in exploring thoughts and feelings and the implications of any decisions.
My psychotherapy practice is based in Oxford, but since lockdown I have started offering online sessions as well as face to face. I enjoy working with individuals, and couples. Most of my therapy work is long term and open-ended.
Unfortunately, I often have a waiting list for psychotherapy appointments
